Blue Earth Workshop at Jadavpur University

"In 1945, students of the College of Engineering and Technology, Jadavpur visited the ‘Blue Earth Machine Shop’ run by the American Army a Khidderpore, Kolkata for an apprenticeship which resulted in recognition of the honours graduates of the College of Engineering and Technology by Massachusetts Institute of Technology (Boston), University of Michigan, Carnegie Institute of Technology (Pittsburgh), Cornell University (New York) and Imperial College of Science & Technology (London).
Post World War II, the Officers of the American Military decided that the huge “Blue Earth Shop” would be donated to a Missionary organization in India so that the said workshop may be used for educational purposes in future. In due course Missionary organization accepted the modern workshop as a donation from the American Army and as per agreement sold it to the College of Engineering and Technology, Jadavpur. On January 26, 1946, the ‘Blue-Earth Machine Shop’ was acquired by the College of Engineering and Technology. The then College of Engineering and Technology, Jadavpur. On January 26, 1946, the ‘Blue-Earth Machine Shop’ was acquired by the College of Engineering and Technology. The then College of Engineering and Technology which was under the aegis of the National Council of Education (NCE) was transformed into Jadavpur University on December 24, 1955 by the Government of West Bengal with the concurrence of the Government of India. Technical education reached a new dimension with the arrival of this workshop. Hands-on training to impart technical education became more effective with this workshop equipped with modern equipment."
